Elsevier Launches Gray's Anatomy 41st Edition with New Digital Dissection

Elsevier, a world-leading provider of scientific, technical and medical information products and services, has launched the 41st edition of Gray's Anatomy: The Anatomical Basis of Clinical Practice. This latest edition of the renowned anatomical reference text used by medical practitioners and students alike has been meticulously revised and updated by a world-leading group of clinicians and anatomists building on more than 150 years of anatomical knowledge.

To celebrate its UK launch, Elsevier is hosting a ceremony at the Royal College of Surgeons of England on the evening of the 23rd October 2015. The Editor-in-Chief of the 41st edition, Professor Susan Standring is due to welcome and address attendees.

Commenting on the new edition, Standring said: "Anatomy has become a far wider discipline than Henry Gray, Henry van Dyke Carter or any of their students could have envisioned. Fields such as cell biology, molecular genetics, neuroanatomy, embryology and bioinformatics either had not emerged or were in their infancy in 1858, when the first edition of Gray's Anatomy was published.

"As new techniques that inform our view of the internal landscape of the body have entered mainstream scientific or clinical use, the new perspectives on the body they afford have filtered into the pages of Gray's Anatomy. I believe that the 41st edition not only continues that tradition but also breaks new ground with an interactive eBook.

The 41st edition is further enriched by new digital content on Expert Consult, an online platform that provides authoritative, world-class book content from Elsevier."

Standring continued: "Being able to expand online has been a liberating experience for me. There is now increased scope to include more clinically relevant anatomical detail, in the form of 77,000 words of additional text, 300 artworks and tables, 17 videos, including an intra-operative tour of the peritoneal cavity, an extensive electronic collection of the latest X-ray, CT, MR and histological images and 24 specially invited Commentaries on topics as diverse as the neurovascular bundles of the prostate, stem cells in regenerative medicine, Merkel cells, and the anatomy of facial ageing."

Emeritus Professor of Anatomy at King’s College London, Susan Standring, MBE, PhD, DSc, Hon FRCS, is a neuroscientist who worked on the biology of repair in the peripheral nervous system for many years. She is a Past President of the Peripheral Nerve Society. As an anatomist, she taught medical and dental students and surgical trainees for 40 years and has championed anatomy as a fundamental component of medical and dental curricula throughout her career. Professor Standring a Past President of the Anatomical Society and Deputy Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Hunterian Collection at the Royal College of Surgeons of England. She is a Fellow of King’s College London and an Honorary Fellow of RCSEng. She was awarded the prestigious Wood Jones Medal of RCSEng for her outstanding contribution to anatomy teaching.
